Book Club: The Mindful Leader

Almost 7 years ago, one of our earliest books was The Mindful Leader by Michael Bunting. At that time, this book did not resonate for me. That happens to all of the members at varying times. Maybe I was too busy to be mindful which would have been very ironic. I have made a commitment to myself to go back and revisit this one because I feel that I would take a lot more from the text this time around.

Bunting covers what he terms “7 practices for transforming your leadership, your organisation and your life”. Drawing on the ancient practice of mindfulness, he emphasises that mindful leaders not only boost the bottom line but also make the world a better place. The practices are focussed on self-awareness. That thing again where all good leadership starts. Developing this practice is said to assist to stay aware and authentic as we navigate the uncertain and complex aspects of our world.

The quick reference guide which accompanied the book quotes that 37 per cent of employee engagement can be attributed to leadership behaviour. Even more reason to invest in your self development and join our leadership book club.

Bunting summarises some of the benefits of mindfulness practice to include enhanced creativity, improved health (including impacts on depression prevention, sleep and some addictions) and improved executive functioning. Marrying leadership practices and research-based mindfulness, Bunting outlines the pathway to include these 7 points:

  1. Be here now
  2. Take 200 per cent accountability
  3. Lead from mindful values
  4. Inspire a mindful vision
  5. Cultivate beginner’s mind
  6. Empower others to shine
  7. Nourish others with love

What I did really like about this book is that it came with a link to a Companion Workbook which I printed and coil bound. The workbook helps to self reflect on each of the 7 practices and consider how you can enhance your leadership in practical ways. Recently, Michael Bunting has also published Vertical Growth with co-author Carl Lemieux which I have sitting in my pile patiently waiting in line to be read.
